More in depth information: HOW TO: Calendar Listing

More in depth how-to from The Washington Post and The New York Times. This is information directly from the sources on how to submit for calendar listings some things to consider.

SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR THE WASHINGTON POST:

Washington Post provides a lot of information online on how to submit to their publication.

Option 1)
Submit Event Listings or Announcements for the Going Out Guide
Send listing information about concerts, dance performances, festivals, literary events, plays and happy hours to events@washingtonpost.com. Along with a description, please include the name of the event, the name and address of the location where it will take place, the dates and times it will take place, the price of admission, a phone number for members of the public to call with questions, any relevant website address, and either a phone number or e-mail contact for use by Post staff.
The Post publishes general interest “Going Out Guides” in Weekend on Friday, Washington Post Magazine on Sunday, and in Style on Saturday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The items listed in the newspaper, however, are a fraction of the many event picks, movie reviews, restaurant listings and nightlife options listed online at goingoutguide.com.

Option 2)
Submit Event Listings or Announcements in Community Calendars
Community calendars run in every Local Living section and contain information about events that would be of interest mainly to people living in that region. To submit an item, send it to one of the following e-mail addresses, depending on where you live:
Fairfax: fxliving@washpost.com
Loudoun:ldliving@washpost.com
Prince William:pwliving@wahpost.com
Arlington/Alexandria:axliving@washpost.com
Southern Maryland:smliving@washpost.com
Prince George’s:pgliving@washpost.com
DC:dcliving@washpost.com
Montgomery:mocoliving@washpost.com
Include event names, dates, times, an exact address, prices and a publishable contact number. All items must be received at least 14 days before publication

THINGS TO CONSIDER

The Washington Post, New York Times and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette are selective in what event listings they print.  All three have online calendars that list 10x more events that what goes to print.  Consider their target market.  Who reads newspapers? Ask yourself, is your event a match?

Washington Post: Audience Composition
Median Age Daily Paper  - 53 years old
Median Age Sunday Paper - 51 years old
Median Household Income Daily Paper - $105,937
Median Household Income Sunday Paper - $99,213
